Matters of the Heart (and Lungs)
Practical Point-of-Care Echocardiography and Lung Ultrasound in the Emergency Department
This workshop will explore the use of point-of-care echocardiography and lung ultrasound in the emergency department setting. It will provide hands-on practical stations using live models with a focus on evaluation of the heart, IVC, lung, and lower limb DVT.
It will be taught jointly by Sonographers and Emergency Physicians with a short lecture component followed by workshops to maximise scanning time.

Candidates – Emergency Medicine Physicians [FACEMs and Trainees]
Date – Saturday 2nd September 2023
Location – Stamford Grand Adelaide Hotel, 2 Jetty Road Glenelg, SA
Time – 9:00am - 4:00pm
The workshop will cover the following areas:
1. Basic Cardiac - imaging of the heart using 4 cardiac views
2. Advanced Cardiac – measures of flow velocity, ejection fraction, valvular pathology
3. IVC – imaging of the inferior vena cava [IVC]
4. Lung – imaging of the lung views
5. Lower limb – assessment for proximal lower limb DVT
There will also be a discussion on the clinical integration of cardiac and lung ultrasound, as well as common pathology encountered, in the emergency department.
NB: This event assumes some prior knowledge of basic ultrasound skills such as knobology.
