Our origin story began in a pub in Sydney, where a small group of future-focused emergency clinicians came together over a shared frustration: there was a clear gap in the education, support, and systems surrounding point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). From that informal gathering, EMUGs was born.
Emergency medicine is in our name, and it’s where we came from. But what we’ve built since 2017 has grown far beyond one specialty. Along the way, we’ve developed a rich ecosystem of peer-led education, clinical collaboration, and community advocacy...something we believe is too valuable to keep to ourselves.
That’s why we’re expanding our horizons to serve all acute care practitioners.
POCUS is now a vital tool across a wide range of critical care settings, from rural general practice and urgent care, to ICU, retrieval, and beyond. We’ve seen growing interest and participation from GPs, paramedics, and clinicians in remote and resource-limited environments, all seeking to strengthen their POCUS capability and feel part of a like-minded community.
EMUGs has always been about connection, confidence, and competence in practice. As we broaden our scope, our mission remains the same: to support the safe, skilled, and sustainable use of POCUS wherever it’s needed most.
So while our roots are firmly in emergency medicine, our future is in acute care, sharing, collaborating, and responding to the evolving needs of clinicians on the frontline.
We’re proud of where we’ve come from, and even more excited about where we’re going.
