Point of Care Ultrasound is now an essential skill of Fellowship trained Emergency Physicians. It is widely supported in national and international guidelines for a host of clinical settings, most notably expediting the appropriate care of both traumatically injured and critically unwell patients as well as in the performance of needle-guided techniques such as central line insertion.
POCUS is truly unique to all other skills learnt by clinicians training in Emergency Medicine as Hospitals must take the initiative to purchase appropriate machines and provide support to the Educators in their departments, both politically and financially, so that they can provide the necessary governance of POCUS use.
It is timely that issues such as these are coming to the forefront in our national media. EMUGS will continue to support, collaborate, coordinate, connect and champion the standardisation of POCUS education and its use in Emergency Departments across Australia and New Zealand.
