The World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine (WFUMB) held two PoCUS courses at their
Centre of Education (CoE) based at the Fiji National University (FNU) in Suva. Two EMUG
FACEMS (Dion and Jen) answered a WhatsApp request for volunteers and travelled to Suva
to share their ultrasound knowledge and upskill Pacific clinicians.
The CoE is housed within the Medical Imaging Department at the FNU medical sciences
campus near the Colonial Memorial Hospital in Suva. The department is well supported by
the medical imaging team with four ultrasound units and various phantoms available for
use. The first PoCUS course was offered in 2023 and covered FAST, biliary, aorta and renal
ultrasound. This was repeated in 2024 with the addition of a second course offering echo
and lung.
Thirty-four participants attended the courses and came from Fiji, Tuvalu, American Samoa
and Papua New Guinea with the pre and post course quiz showing a significant
improvement in ultrasound knowledge for all participants.
I’m sure we can all appreciate the following quote from a participant.
"I see how scanning could become intuitive, like driving or breathing"
Sounds like an ultrasound convert!
